Progress in the Studio 6/22

Well, I am make a little progress on my garden gate in Rome, Italy 36 x 48
This was just a side road we were walking down. I really need to find out the name.

The painting above 36 x 48 and below 16 x 20 are both from a canoeing trip down the Estero River near . I just loved the old boat pulled up on the dock. Below is a suspension bridge crossing the river to the boat dock. This one is quite different for me. It will be the first time I have put a person in one of my landscapes. I just could not resist including the ancient woman and her dog slowly making their way across. It will be interesting to see how I do.

This is a small commission piece I am working on. I am using a color photo for this since I have never been to the location.

Don't I wish my studio was so clean! I am house and pet sitting for my parents and set up a little studio in the laundry room. The dogs have been supervising. Always a great help! Cheers, Dawn

Progress in the Studio 6/2

Now that I have finished my commissions, I have been tearing up the studio trying to produce my own work. Sales at the shows have been very good and that always gives me a lot positive energy to bring to the studio. Check out the results.

This is the tree I have been working on for while. As you can see, it has really changed. I hope to finish up this week.

This is a scene I came across while canoeing down the Estero River. I am really excited about this one. I just love the old boat pulled up on the bank.
Below you can see the black and white that I am working from.

This is a wonderful garden gate that Rob and I can across in Rome. We were trying to take a short cut to the coliseum, but it was a dead end. I am glad we to the walk, because this is going to be a fun painting.

Progress in the Studio 5/13/2009: Trees are in for the spring

Now that I have finally finished all of my commission work, I can once again focus on my work. I seem to have gravitated towards trees again. It is funny how a subject emerges. I am enjoying the loose format after the structure of 5 commission paintings.

This is from a large tree I photographed in Southern Louisiana while cycling on the Tammy Trace Trail. The overall size is 48" high by 68" wide. Below is the photo I am working from.

These are 2 10 x 10 Crape Myrtle - not quit finished.

Last but not least, 2 - 10" x 15" Oak trees - Finished!!!

Fruit commission finished and ready to ship!!!

I finally finished my fruit commission and got final approval from the client. I will be able to ship these out by the end on the week. What a joy to finish a project.   Now I can return my focus to the Taco Mac commission. I think I should finish by the end of this week.

Now that I am almost done with my commission work, I can get back to work on my big ole Tree painting. If I work really hard, maybe I'll have it ready for Decatur..........maybe.

Cheers!

Dawn

Photos from the iron pour

First you carve and scratch out your template out with a rusty nail.

Heating up the furnace. It will get to about 3000 degrees.

Now they are pouring the molten iron into the molds.

That is my tree sizzling in the sand.

Next they pour the iron into a mold made of ice.

Pretty crazy!

None of us could believe how long the ice stayed solid. It only boiled and sizzled at the bottom.

Now we all thought there would be an explosion when they poured the ice.....check out what happens with just regular old wood.

It was like fireworks. What fun!!

Thanks to Alan Cordrey, George Miko and Timothy Hale for the photos as I forgot my camera.

Cheers, Dawn

Progress in the Studio 4/3/2009

The large fruit commission is coming along nicely. This is a commission from the San Marco show in Jacksonville. It is three 24 x 24 paintings and one 30 x 40. These will definitely living up someones kitchen.

This is a new piece I started this week. It is going to be of a large tree I photographed in Southern Louisiana. The triptych will be 48 x 68. The 2 side panels are 48 x 20 and the middle panel is 48 by 28. This is the first triptych I have done were the panels are different widths.

The Taco Mac Commission....will I ever finish? I am working on this one today and I'll set a date to finish in 2 weeks. Do you think I can do it? Let's hope so.

Cheers!!!

Art sales are going well and the weather is beautiful!

My Florida trip is winding down so let me go over the highlights.

Juno Beach – great beach, pretty good sales. A lady came in and bought all three of my fruit paintings. It was a complete impulse buy on her part, but she loved them and had to have them. The coolest sale of that show was a college boy who purchased a 15 x 15 garden scene. When I asked him if he knew where it was going he said,” No, I am in school, I am just buying work that I really like for when I graduate and have a house.” How awesome is that?

Jonathan State Park was a great place to camp. There were miles and miles of cycling trails on road and off. I look forward to coming back….Just beware of the overly aggressive raccoons.

Key Biscayne – Beautiful Key – See photos. I sold a big one here! Oh happy day. An Evening Stroll went to a couple from LaGrange GA, so I will be driving around with it until we can meet in Atlanta on April 1st. I also sold a few small pieces to a lovely woman from Mississippi. I stayed a few extra days and got in some great cycling, I rode my bike from Miami over to Virginia Key and Key Biscayne. It was only about 30 mile round trip and the only hills are the bridges. Nice!

My last night in Miami, my van was attacked by thieves in the hotel parking lot. The crooks made of with all of my painting supplies and tools, but the paintings were all safe and there was little damage to the van. I found a home Depot and Utrecht and was able to purchase the minimum. Thank God they did not make off with any of my display. What better way to retaliate a theft than go to the Fairchild Botanical Gardens? A good three-hour walk through the gardens and life was good again and I headed the van to Naples. I will let you know all about Koreshan State Park. Cheers! Dawn
