Celebrating 35 years of Spruill!
Camping my way to Philly and back. If you're going to drive 1600 miles, you might as well have fun.
Last weekend I had a show in Manayunk Pa (Philadelphia) and this time I decided to enjoy myself and break up the trip by camping along the way, taking my kayak and bike along.
On the way up I camped at the North Bend Federal Park in VA. This campground rocks! Most campsites had their own beach and some where boating sites only. For a girl who grew up on the lake...I could not have been happier. Below are photos from my site.
On the way home from the show I stopped at the Lums Pond Campground in Delaware. Even though I arrived in the dark on Sunday night, the mountain biking the next day was so worth it. Also, I don't think I've been to a campsite before where families made a fence and brought the horses.
Since I still had another 700 miles before home, I camped in VA again on the way home. Instead of take I 85 home as I did on the way up, I decided to take 81 to 77 and camp at the New River Trail campsite. This is a very small campsite and there are no amenities but the cycling is worth it. There are about 55 miles of trails that you can ride and the scenery is magnificent. Below are a few photos from the trail. I only went about 20 miles, but I hope to come back again and ride the entire trail sometime.

The reception for
Dawn Kinney Martin is
Sat., April 10, 2010
5-10 p.m.
Her use of color to enhance scenes from nature are brilliant and textural.
Dawn takes black and white photos during her travels, and creates vibrant palette knife paintings in her studio.Dawn is a local jewel in the art community and is constantly on the road at shows, or teaching art courses. Take this opportunity to meet Dawn, see her in action and begin your collection!
The Gallery will provide light hors d'oeuvres and beverages during the reception. Plus if the weather is pleasant, we'll open our outdoor artist market in front of the Gallery and try and coax Dawn into doing a painting demonstration.
So join us and let's enjoy the evening!
Dawn is an Atlanta-based artist with national and international collectors. Each year she photographs landscapes and structures during her travels and paints from these photos throughout the year. Dawn has also become a favorite for her depictions of local landmarks such as Taco Mac and the Highland Pub.
Dawn's unique and detailed palette knife
technique is vibrant and arresting, with each piece drawing the viewer to a new experience. One noteworthy technique employed by Dawn is her color "ultra-color" enhancement, bringing scenes from nature vividly to life!
In addition to Dawn's works on display at the gallery, please visit her website: www.dawnart.com
Painting process
Then I lay out the composition on the canvas. Canvas size is 48 x 36. Next it is layering the underneath color. These will be the colors that show through the spaces in the top layers.
The next step is building the shapes and unifying the color.
I'm getting close to finishing this one. I'll be sure to post a photo of the finished painting.
Cheers,
Dawn
Art in the afternoon
Stop by to see my latest work and enjoy light appetizers and refreshments while experiencing art in casual settings. In keeping with Art in the Afternoon’s traditions, you will be able to talk with the artists to discover what inspires their work.
An impressive list of plein air artists, glass artists, pottery and jewelry artisans and fine artists have signed up for the first three Saturdays in April, May and June. Artists include Bart Webb, Jim Loftus, Dawn Kinney Martin and Mohamed el Ganoby in April, Mike Melia, Holle Black and Jill Bates in May and Peg Blackley, Jessica Gonacha and Sarah Watts in June.
New this year, attendance is free. And yes, you can still purchase the artwork you love.
“This year, we’re focusing on emerging artists and affordable art in keeping with the economy,” says Jen Singh, Art in the Afternoon chair. “Another format change is the lack of ticket sales. The focus is truly on the artists and our patrons.”

Gallery reception for Jen Singh, March 13th 5- 10PM
Come meet the whimisical art behind a beautiful face!
Jen Singh's work combines mixed media, collage, ink linework and painting. Jen is a favorite in the Decatur-Avondale area for her volunteer efforts to support the artist community. But she is a great talent in her own right, with an amazing range of skills.
Look for the recurring theme of birds in many of her works.
The Gallery will provide light hors d'oeuvres and beverages during the reception. Plus, if the weather is pleasant, we'll open our outdoor artist market in front of the Gallery. Free to attend. Join us!
