Day 10 Painting!
Day 9 Painting - Mixed Media
Okay, I couldn't sleep last night so I was up at 5:00 am and thought I might as well get some work done. Here is my painting for today. This is an oil on wood. The Plow Boy label is an actually vintage label I came across and thought it would be cool to add into my flower series. |
12"x36" oil and paper on wood |
Typically I wouldn't just whip out a painting say done. I like to give myself a few days to let all the mistakes crop up. But I guess that is part of the fun of the challenge, seeing what you can accomplish working quickly.
Until tomorrow,,,
PS - The carpet is almost installed!
Day 8 Painting
5x7 Acrylic " Make Lemonade!" |
I had to do an easy one today, but these are fun to do because it just a play with color dancing around the lemon.
I am happy I was able to finish one today and all the other projects that had to be finished today.
We are getting new carpet in the morning. So I had to finish the venetian plaster( applied, sanded, white washed and sealed) and get the new ceiling fan up.
Yay, all done. This is the last of the house projects. I can't wait to get my life back!
See you tomorrow
Day 7 - Blue Flame!
Okay, I finished my painting for the day before the sun went down, but I'm still not very happy with the photo. There is all sorts of purples going in to my dark blues and turquoises in some of the lightest blues. This is why I am a painter and not a photographer --urrrggghhh!
10"x20" Oil on canvas - palette knife |
Day 6 - Painting
Day 5 Just in the nick of time!
Day 4 of 30 Paintings
Painting for Day 3
"Sunshine" 12x12 oil on canvas |
After a couple of disasters in the studio, I was finally able to pull this one out.
Some days you soar with angels and others... not so much.
Oh, well I look forward to seeing what happens tomorrow. At least now I can work in the studio for the rest of the day and I don't have to finish anything!
See you tomorrow, Dawn
Day 2 of 30 paintings in 30 Day
Alright, here is my painting for day 2.
"Lilies and Coy" 5x7 |
The color is a little off on this and I lack the photos shop skills to correct it.
That always drives me nuts. Check out all the artists work at http://www.lesliesaeta.blogspot.com/

My friends, Jim and Carla, brought me this great photo from Ill. |
My friends brought me this great photo. They just knew it would make a great painting.
I just finished a small study and know I'm ready to work on the big'un!
The larger one is going to be 24"x 36". I always like to paint a small one to work out the composition.
Let's see what happens next!
Happy New Year,
Dawn
Back in the Studio
After weeks of working on the house, it is nice to get back in the studio. Below is a painting I just started and can't wait to see how it develops.

WonderRoot News
Art Drive: Now's the Time
WonderRoot, Burnaway and SeekATL present Art Drive, a tour across Atlanta's artistic landscape culminating in an evening of libations and conversation at Octane in Grant Park on November 17th.
Sponsored by Binders Art Supplies and Frames, Art Drive, will transport 25 gallery-goers, creating a temporary community who will share an immersive day of visits and conversations, unbroken by traffic and parking concerns. Registered participants will meet at the Octane in Grant Park at 11:45 a.m. The bus will stop at 5 locations, including galleries, a private collection, and an artist talk. The tour will cross town several times, visiting diverse neighborhoods and art spaces.
While SeekATL, BurnAway, and WonderRoot can only invite a limited number of lucky folks to hop on the bus, anyone can come to Octane at 11:45 p.m. to pick up the day's ‘til-then-top-secret itinerary and follow along in a caravan using their own transportation.
The bus will depart at 12 pm sharp, and return at 5 pm to an evening of cocktails and discussion for all, including those who didn't make the gallery tour! A portion of the Octane’s profits for that night will be donated back to the program’s presenters.
The weather looks like it will be perfect in Pensacola this weekend! If you are going to the Great Gulf Coast Art Festival in Seville Square, stop by and see me. I'm in Picasso 33.

Using your Values to building a composition
I just finished teaching a workshop on painting landscapes and I thought I would share a few tips. |
Original photo. This is a scene in France that I am working on. |
I often like to make a black and white copy so that I can just focus on the values and not be distracted by the color. |
I forgot to photograph Step 1 which was a monochromatic value study. This is Step 2 | . |
Step 2: now that you have blocked in the large areas of light and dark, check to make sure you like the design of your composition. This is the time to make adjustments. You can know start to build on the information you have down. |
Step 3 |
Step 3: Working within in the pattern of your light and dark values, start to build the color.
Step 4 |
Step 4: continue to build the color, still mindful of your values. You can now begin to add details
Step 5 |
Step 5: Adding more detail and adjust the colors. If you keep your colors in the correct value range, you will keep the compositional design.
Now for the fun to start - laying in the details and rich color. At this point, you are free to paint. You have your foundation set, so have fun.
I will post the finished painting ASAP
Step 6 |

Impromptu Plein Air
This past weekend a few of us met up at the Green Market in Piedmont Park for a little plein air painting. October is such a fabulous time to be out and about in Atlanta, we decided to try something new and take advantage of the great weather.
Plein air is always a challenge, but it's a fun way to get out and paint with friends. |
The Green Market at Piedmont. |
My subject for the day |
Painting in progress. As I don't paint people often, I thought it would be interesting to see if I could capture a market scene. |
I would like to make a few touch up on my painting. Work with the dappling light a little more. We'll see.
Until next time, Dawn

Thank you Alexandria,VA!
What a wonderful art show this past weekend in Alexandria! This was my first time in the area, what a great town. Saturday started out at 3:30 in the morning for the set up and boy was it humid. It stayed hot and humid, but that didn't keep people from coming out. Sales were strong all day until the tornado warning around 3:30. A big thanks to the organizers and the police for coming around to warn us and get everyone off the streets. The tornado went around us but with the heavy winds and rains, the show was closed for the rest of the day. Sunday was absolutely perfect! Pleasantly warm, no wind or humidity. Oh, if all of my shows could be this nice. Here are a few of my paintings that have a new home in Virginia.
